On April 22, 2020, Tarrik Mack-Sumpter, 27, was found fatally wounded in the backyard of his home on Lewis Road in Sumter, South Carolina after a call reporting shots fired shortly after 1:45 p.m. Family and friends remembered Mack-Sumpter for his vibrant personality and infectious smile.

Investigators said the shooting grew out of a planned drug transaction that escalated into an armed robbery. Witnesses reported a man and a woman fleeing in a light-colored vehicle, and police released a sketch of the male suspect. Assistance came from the State Law Enforcement Division and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.

Within days two people were arrested. Markel Anthony Atkinson, 22, of Bishopville, was taken after a brief foot chase, and Tracy Angela Legg, 25, of Sumter, was arrested at her home. Both were charged with murder and armed robbery; Atkinson also faced a weapons charge. Anyone with information about the case or who knew Tarrik is asked to come forward.
