On the evening of Monday, April 20, 2020, deputies responded to a Hopkins, South Carolina, home on South Partridge Circle after reports of gunfire. Two women were found with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies: 76-year-old Sarah Mae Richbow and her 28-year-old granddaughter Kiara A. Richbow. Both were transported to a hospital and died in the early hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

Investigators identified 28-year-old Dontrell Henry Rufus as the suspect. Rufus, described as Kiara’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, allegedly arrived at the home uninvited, forced his way inside during an argument while other family members and the couple’s young child were present, and opened fire. He fled the scene but was located the next morning on Broad River Road after a tip and taken into custody; he was charged with two counts of murder.
