On April 7, 2020, 20-year-old Tybius Owens was found inside a home on Ida Lane in Conway, South Carolina, with a gunshot wound to his chest. Police were called in the early hours after a witness, later found at the scene holding Owens and crying, told officers she had been in the living room when she heard shots and then discovered him on the bedroom floor.

Two days later, on April 9, 2020, the Horry County Police Department announced the arrest of 19-year-old Jerome Tyler Evans of Conway. Evans was charged with murder in connection with Owens’s death and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, held without bond. Court records gave Evans an address matching the Ida Lane residence. Reports note he had no prior criminal history in Horry County.
