On the night of January 21, 2020, 51-year-old Geoffrey Seidel was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Food Lion on Maybank Highway in Johns Island, South Carolina. Seidel, a former OB-GYN who had practiced in Cary, North Carolina, was found deceased in the back of an Uber after an altercation inside the vehicle escalated and the driver shot him.
Seidel’s family remembered him as kind and compassionate and noted he did not own a gun. The Uber driver remained at the scene and cooperated with Charleston Police. After investigators reviewed the evidence and consulted with the local solicitor’s office, the shooting was ruled a justifiable homicide; no arrests were made and no charges were filed. The community, including former patients and colleagues, was left grieving his death.
Did anyone on Johns Island or who knew Dr. Seidel notice anything unusual about him in the weeks before January 21, 2020?
