Courtenay Ambrose Smalls was 29 when he was fatally shot on the sidewalk outside his mother’s home at 2025 St. Francis Street in North Charleston on the evening of January 8, 2020. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 7:15 p.m.; officers found him bleeding in front of the house and he died at the scene. He was a restaurant manager, an active local rapper known as Big C, and a father to daughter Zaria and son Massiah; online tributes and family statements emphasize his role as a devoted parent and a vibrant figure in Charleston’s music community.
Initial police statements released little detail about suspects, but nine days after the killing warrants were obtained for Terris White and Jabari Lee, who were arrested on January 17, 2020 and charged with murder. On January 25, 2020, police also charged 72-year-old Linda Mozelle Grant Hines, known as Granny, with accessory after the fact, alleging she helped the two men hide while they were wanted.
Courtenay’s obituary lists numerous surviving family members and directs celebrations of his life to Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Does anyone in the Charleston area have information about that night or remember Courtenay’s work and music that could help fill gaps in the timeline?
