Derrick Snacks Davontrez Slater, 23, was reported missing from Sumter, South Carolina, on October 22, 2019, after he failed to return home from his job as a manager at a McDonald’s in nearby Camden. Family members searched for him, and his body was found on October 26, 2019, along Scales Road in Sumter County. An autopsy determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and authorities quickly ruled the death a homicide.

A 15-year-old male from the Rembert community was arrested and charged with murder and detained at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remained active, that more arrests were expected, and that robbery appeared to be the preliminary motive. Derrick was remembered by the community as a beloved, hardworking young man who had been eagerly anticipating the birth of his first child; hundreds attended a candlelight vigil and released 23 balloons in his honor.
