Amir Omarion Brewer-Samuel was 16 when he was shot at about 11:45 p.m. on August 9, 2019, at the Whispering Pines Apartments on Abner Road in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was not a resident of the complex but was found on the ground by a resident who at first thought he was having a seizure; closer inspection showed he had been shot in the back. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation and asked the community for help. Months after the shooting there had been no arrests, and the case remained active. Family, friends, and community members held vigils and called for justice following his death.
