A Friday night bingo outing in late July 2019 ended in a double homicide at Waccamaw Bingo in the Belle Terre Plaza off U.S. Highway 501. Stephen Steve Johnson Sr., 73, and his son Stephen Sparky Johnson Jr., 46, both of Sumter, South Carolina, were fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery when a man with his face covered by a white cloth demanded money. Witnesses said a patron tried to tackle the gunman as he fled; despite bystanders rendering aid until emergency crews arrived, both men died of their wounds. Initial police description identified the suspect as a Black man in gray clothing.

Investigators charged two men from Georgetown: Derrick Rivera and Bradford Britton. Rivera was accused of being the shooter and faced additional weapons charges; Britton was described as the getaway driver. Rivera was tried in October 2021, convicted of two counts of murder and armed robbery, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 30 years; he filed an appeal in late 2024 seeking to overturn the sentence. In October 2021 Britton pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder and attempted armed robbery; specific sentencing details were not publicly reported.

Did anyone who attended that bingo hall that night or who knew the Johnsons see anything that could still help clarify what happened?
