On the night of Sunday, June 23, 2019, 11-year-old JaNaiya Jarvasia Scott was killed when at least 35 bullets were fired into her family’s home on West End Avenue in Anderson, South Carolina. JaNaiya was on the phone with her best friend when the shooting began; her mother found her wounded and tried CPR, but JaNaiya died before reaching the hospital. Two other family members, an 18-year-old and another 11-year-old, were wounded and survived.
Investigators found evidence that two different firearms—a pistol and an SKS rifle—were used, and they say at least one other suspect remains at large. Police located and arrested 17-year-old Stephen Braden Powell in Spartanburg; he was charged with one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder and was denied bond at his hearing. A social media post confessing the killing appeared briefly on a Facebook page under Powell’s name, then was deleted and replaced with a claim the account was hacked; authorities said they already had investigative leads and did not link the post directly to the arrest.
Does anyone in the Anderson area remember unusual activity near West End Avenue that night or have information about additional suspects?
