On the evening of May 3, 2019, a verbal dispute in front of a home on Coach Hill Drive in Gaffney, South Carolina, escalated into fatal gunfire. Twenty-seven-year-old Jerry Lee Scalf, Jr. was at his sister’s residence when an argument with a man who accused him of making false allegations turned violent. After the man pushed Scalf and Scalf pushed back, the assailant produced a handgun and fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Scalf. The shooter then fled on foot.
Witnesses at the scene, including Scalf’s twin sister, heard the confrontation and the shots; they could not clearly see the shooter’s face but described a build and mannerisms they said resembled Diante Jermaine Willis. Investigators recovered a Bluetooth earbud by the shell casings that was later linked to a charging case found in Willis’s vehicle. Willis, 25 at the time, was captured after a brief foot chase near his home and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Friends and family remembered Scalf, a Gaffney High School graduate and father of three, as joyful and outgoing.
Did anyone in the neighborhood see the confrontation or the person who ran from the scene?
