Evan Jeffery Gaines, 22, was found with a gunshot wound at the Campus Edge Apartments in Spartanburg on March 26, 2019. A University of South Carolina Upstate senior and business major from Columbia, Gaines was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and died that evening. He had been weeks away from graduation and had plans with his girlfriend, including names they had chosen for future children; the university later awarded him his degree posthumously.
Investigators later determined the killing resulted from a robbery that escalated into homicide. In November 2019 the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office announced arrests of five men from Columbia: Darryl Wayne Cooley, 23; Rodriguez Kentavious Marshall, 20; Antonio K. Marshall, 25; Cainan Keison Gregory Griffin, 21; and Douglas Alexander Wright, Jr., 24. Charges included murder and armed robbery, with Wright identified as the alleged shooter. Investigators said cell phone records helped piece together the night’s events and that several of the arrested men confessed to roles in the crime.
Does anyone have information about Evan’s last known movements or who might have seen him that night?
