Martrellyiz Vereen was 18 and a senior at Loris High School when he was found shot to death on March 25, 2019. Authorities discovered him around 6:15 p.m. along a dirt road near Flag Patch Cemetery, lying behind a car. The Horry County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide and estimated the shooting occurred shortly before he was found.
Known as Trez, Vereen was active in his community as an usher at Freemont Missionary Baptist Church and a member of his high school R.O.T.C. Program. Investigators say a verbal argument at St. Stephen A.M.E. Church Cemetery between Vereen and another 18-year-old, Aaron Miguel Vereen, escalated into a physical fight; Aaron Vereen allegedly produced a handgun and shot Martrellyiz multiple times. Aaron Vereen was arrested and initially charged with voluntary manslaughter and a weapons offense; the charge was later upgraded to murder. A second 18-year-old, Tyshon Clifton, was arrested on an obstruction charge for allegedly withholding information.
