Davontae Grant, 19, was shot and killed on the evening of December 16, 2018, at the Hilton Head Gardens apartment complex on Hilton Head Island. Beaufort County deputies were called for reports of gunfire around 9:30 p.m.; Grant, a resident of Bluffton, was found dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.

A second man was also struck in the shooting and suffered multiple gunshot wounds; he was airlifted to a Savannah hospital in critical condition. Investigators identified 24-year-old Brandon Warren of Bluffton as a suspect and obtained an arrest warrant. Warren was arrested with U.S. Marshals assistance and initially charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the other victim’s shooting. Court records later show a charge of Accessory After the Fact to Felony A, B, C, or Murder against Brandon Thomas Warren, but the final disposition and whether anyone was charged directly with Grant’s murder are not specified.
