Marcus Brown, 54, was shot and killed in Sumter, South Carolina on October 30, 2018. He had been sitting in his vehicle outside his sister’s home when a passing car opened fire; Brown was struck and later died at a local hospital. Investigators say Brown was not the intended target. The reported target was a man named Kalvin Epps, who was associated with the residence and allegedly involved in a series of shootings tied to a dispute between rival groups.
The shooting is described as a tragic case of an innocent bystander killed in crossfire. For years the investigation stalled amid limited cooperation from potential witnesses. In June 2021 authorities charged Tas’Je Shakur Spann, who was already incarcerated on unrelated murder charges, in connection with Brown’s death; the charges included murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Does anyone in Sumter remember the night of October 30, 2018, or have information that could help bring more clarity to what happened?
