Joe Darius Black, 48, a retired U.S. Marine Corps Major, was fatally shot on the evening of October 10, 2018, while sitting on the porch of his home in Hodges, Greenwood County, South Carolina. Family members inside the house began CPR; emergency responders continued efforts but Black was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the shot did not come from a targeted attack or altercation. A nearby 17-year-old, Eason Reid Gravley, was reported to have been aiming a handgun at a road sign; the projectile missed or passed through the sign, traveled into a wooded area in front of Black’s residence, and struck him. Gravley turned himself in to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office and was arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter and possession of a handgun. He was released on a $25,000 personal recognizance bond with a curfew and removal of firearms from his home.

The shooting ended the life of a decorated veteran, husband, and father and raised questions about careless firearm use and public safety. Did anyone in the Hodges area see or hear anything that could clarify exactly where the shot came from that night?
