On October 3, 2018, Florence County Sheriff’s Investigator Farrah Turner, 36, was mortally wounded during a prolonged ambush-style attack on officers serving a search warrant in Florence, South Carolina. Deputies had gone to the home on a sexual assault investigation involving the suspect’s son when gunfire erupted from a second-story window. The shooter, 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins, fired from a tactical position with a rifle as officers approached.

Turner was struck in the abdomen and suffered severe injuries; the standoff that followed lasted about two hours and involved more than 400 rounds. Six other officers were also shot and Florence Police Sgt. Terrence Carraway was killed at the scene. Turner underwent numerous surgeries, including amputations of both feet, and remained hospitalized for 19 days before dying of her injuries on October 22, 2018.

Hopkins was taken into custody after the standoff and charged in connection with the attack; his son, Seth Hopkins, was arrested on separate charges related to the underlying sexual assault investigation. Turner was described as a committed 12-year law enforcement veteran devoted to serving victims.
