On October 3, 2018, Sergeant Terrence Felipe Carraway, 52, of the Florence Police Department was shot and killed while responding to a call for backup in the Vintage Place subdivision in Florence, South Carolina. Carraway, an African American and a 30-year veteran of the department who also served in the U.S. Air Force, arrived after three Florence County deputies were shot while attempting to serve a warrant at the home of 74-year-old Fred Hopkins.
Hopkins opened fire on deputies, then took a position at a second-floor window. Carraway and three other Florence officers were hit while trying to rescue the wounded deputies; all were taken to hospital and Carraway died of his wounds. Investigator Farrah Turner of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office later died from injuries sustained in the same incident. Hopkins barricaded himself inside the house with children for about two hours before being taken into custody; a bullet-proof vehicle was used to extract the injured officers.
Hopkins, described as a disabled Vietnam veteran and disbarred lawyer, was arrested at the scene and charged in connection with the shootings. Reports say he had warned people the night before that he would shoot any police who came to his house. If anyone knew Sergeant Carraway or has information about the incident, please share what can help the ongoing record of this case.
