Fantasia Shyann Jackson was 12 when she was shot and killed in Timmonsville, South Carolina, on the late summer evening of August 25, 2018. She had just returned from a local fair and was dropped off at her grandparents’ home around 11:30 p.m. Moments later, while running for cover in the yard, she was struck by gunfire and died.

The shooting grew out of a sequence of retaliatory violence that began earlier that night at a party, where Cedric Young was beaten. Young reportedly shot at a house afterward. In turn, Michael Christian Barclay sought out Young on a nearby street and opened fire; Fantasia was hit during that exchange. Fantasia’s family described her as a sweet, kind girl with a beautiful smile who had survived a brain tumor at age four and later underwent hip replacement surgery.

Three people were arrested in connection with the case: Michael Christian Barclay, who was taken into custody in Brooklyn, New York, and two others, Demonta Kabora Hickson and Jimmy Lee Hampton Jr., who faced murder charges as co-defendants.
