On the night of February 18, 2018, 20-year-old Kyishawn Archie, a Black male also known as Carter Johnson, was at a Meadow Circle residence in Sumter, South Carolina, with two friends when a rifle discharged. Archie was struck by a single gunshot, taken to Palmetto Health Tuomey, and pronounced dead. The Sumter Police Department determined the shooting was accidental.

Authorities arrested a 19-year-old friend, Rashid Qawiyy Spain, who was identified as the person handling the rifle when it discharged. Spain was charged with involuntary manslaughter, an offense alleging an unintentional death resulting from reckless or negligent conduct; no other suspects or murder charges were reported.
