Jarvis Omar Rush, 34, was found dead in a grassy lot on East Newberry Avenue in Sumter, South Carolina, on the morning of January 13, 2018. His body was discovered about 10:30 a.m.; investigators said he had sustained several gunshot wounds and that the shooting had occurred hours earlier. Rush was remembered by coworkers at a local restaurant as a good man.
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office opened a homicide investigation and offered a $5,000 reward for information. After reward posters were distributed, the sheriff’s office reported receiving many tips. Authorities arrested two suspects within weeks: 17-year-old Gerquell Harris on February 1, 2018, and 26-year-old Mario Antwan Lloyd on February 2, 2018. Investigators alleged the shooting occurred during an attempted armed robbery and said Lloyd fired the shots; Lloyd was charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy, while Harris faced charges including accessory to attempted armed robbery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy.
Did anyone in Sumter know Jarvis Rush or see activity around East Newberry Avenue that morning?
