Malik Cooper was 18 when he was shot and killed on December 13, 2017, in North Charleston, South Carolina. Known affectionately as Bubba, Cooper’s funeral was held at Lovely Mountain Baptist Church and he was buried in Johnson Cemetery in his hometown. The shooting prompted an intensive local investigation.

Authorities later identified 25-year-old Willis Ivey as a suspect. Ivey, who had grown up with and played with Malik’s older brothers, was arrested after a high-speed chase that ended when his vehicle crashed into a police car. Ivey was charged with Cooper’s murder and with a second October 2017 murder, along with multiple other charges including gun warrants and assault on a police officer while resisting arrest. Cooper’s mother, Celestine Dixon, publicly expressed sorrow for her son and offered prayers for Ivey’s family.

What details about Malik’s life or the neighborhood that evening might help explain what happened, or would anyone with information about the shooting or the persons involved come forward?
