William Lamar Carter was 27 when he was shot on the evening of Wednesday, November 22, 2017, near Red Bank Road and Highway 52 in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Officers found him with life-threatening injuries; he was taken to a local hospital and died of his wounds that night, leaving his family and community in shock.
Investigators quickly developed a suspect. Law enforcement named 27-year-old Gawain Rushawn Wilson as the primary suspect, and a warrant for murder was issued. Wilson was located and arrested by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in North Charleston the following day, Thanksgiving, and booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Reports state Wilson later pleaded guilty to Carter’s murder and received a 35-year sentence. What details about that evening or a possible motive have not been made public?
