Michael Smith, 64, was shot and killed inside his Long Meadow Drive home in the Conway area of Horry County on the evening of May 12, 2024. Neighbors had seen Michael and his wife, 63-year-old Laura Ann Smith, earlier that day riding their golf cart with their dog, but a dispute over finances reportedly escalated later that night.

Authorities say Laura Smith placed a 911 call at about 9 p.m., told the dispatcher she had shot someone, and waited outside for officers. Horry County Police found Michael in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the upper right chest and a revolver nearby; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Laura Smith was taken into custody, charged with murder, and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail as the investigation continues.
