Lester Wade Walters was 53 when he was shot and killed at home on August 13, 2017. A lifelong Marion County resident from Mullins, he worked as a foreman with Asplund Tree Company and was described as a devoted father to Rocky Skipper and Amy Walters, a grandfather, and an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, basketball, softball and Clemson football.

Deputies found Walters dead from a gunshot wound inside a residence on Opal Court Road near Nichols. Investigators said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic issue and the State Law Enforcement Division’s crime-scene unit processed the scene. His wife, Donna Walters, was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and was booked into the Marion County Detention Center.

Donna Walters remained under indictment and was released on bond, but she died in April 2019 while still awaiting trial, and no verdict was reached. With no other suspects publicly named, the prosecution ended before adjudication; other details about the shooting’s circumstances remain limited.

If anyone knew Lester or has information about what happened that day, please share what can help clarify the case.
