On the night of July 23, 2017, an altercation on Durant Cemetery Road in Johnsonville, South Carolina, ended with 18-year-old Dylan Wayne Hanna shot and taken to a Florence hospital. Dylan, a rising senior at Johnsonville High School and a recent recruit for the United States Marine Corps, died of his injuries the next day, July 24, 2017.

Florence County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested 17-year-old Wyatt Shane Altman and charged him with murder. Altman was held at the Florence County Detention Center pending bond. The case was later reviewed under South Carolina’s Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine, and a judicial finding concluded Altman acted within that statute; the murder charge was dismissed and he was cleared of criminal liability.

The shooting deeply affected the small community where both teenagers lived. If anyone has information about the events on Durant Cemetery Road that night, please come forward.
