Seventeen-year-old Knowledge Sumpter was found dead in a yard along Harvey Avenue in North Charleston on the morning of July 21, 2017. Police determined he had been shot and killed the previous night after an attempted robbery. Officers responded to reports of gunshots just before 10 p.m. on July 20.

The investigation led to arrests of two teenagers. Deangelo Montrell Haynes Jr., 16 at the time, was charged with murder; court documents allege Haynes shot Sumpter as he tried to flee the robbery attempt. A 14-year-old male was also taken into custody and charged with murder; that younger suspect turned himself in accompanied by his lawyer. Haynes’s case is being prosecuted in adult court.

Anyone who knew Knowledge Sumpter, witnessed events on Harvey Avenue the night of July 20, 2017, or has information that could help is asked to come forward.
