Devonte Hicks, 20, was shot on Salters Street in Lake City, South Carolina, on July 2, 2017. After the shooting he was driven toward Main Street, where bystanders flagged down an ambulance. Hicks was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival; the Florence County Coroner attributed his death to gunshot wounds.

Law enforcement identified 18-year-old Ahmad Rasheek Nesbitt of Lake City as the suspect. Nesbitt was arrested on July 3, 2017, and booked into the Florence County Detention Center on a murder charge. The case then proceeded through the legal system.
