In the early morning hours of June 26, 2017, a taxi cab crashed into a home on Juniper Bay Road in Conway, South Carolina. Inside the vehicle, 66-year-old Dennis Mantel, an Imperial Cab driver, was found unresponsive and initially thought to be in cardiac arrest. First responders then discovered a fatal gunshot wound to his neck. Mantel was taken to Conway Medical Center and pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m.

The Horry County Police Department treated the death as a homicide and identified Marion Javon Campbell, 23, as the primary suspect. A warrant was issued after investigators said Campbell fled to Florida. Campbell later returned to South Carolina and was charged in Mantel’s death; police reported the motive as a botched robbery. In October 2019 Campbell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, and the judge imposed a 30-year sentence with an 85 percent service requirement.

If anyone knew Mantel or has information about the events that night, please share what you know.
