Freeman Angelo Rivers, 55, was a well-known, soft-spoken presence on Bailey Drive in North Charleston. Neighbors remembered him riding his bicycle with his dog and stopping to chat, a steady figure whose absence was immediately noticed when a fire broke out at his home before dawn on June 8, 2017. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about ten minutes, and Rivers’ body was found inside the burned house.
The Charleston County coroner determined Rivers died of gunshot wounds. Investigators found him in the bathtub with a cord around his neck and multiple gunshot wounds to his head, and evidence suggested the fire had been set after the killing to try to hide the crime. Detectives later focused on a relative, Gregory Green, and charged him with murder, weapons offenses and arson, while another man, Terrance Doucet, was charged as an accessory. Prosecutors presented phone records and testimony alleging River’s killing stemmed from an unpaid drug debt and described calls and movements in the early-morning hours around the time of the slaying.
Does anyone on Bailey Drive or in the Accabee and Dorchester Terrace neighborhoods remember seeing or hearing anything unusual that night?
