A block party on Winetta Street in Laurens, South Carolina, on the night of May 20, 2017, turned deadly when gunfire erupted among a crowd of more than 300 people. Two men were shot and later died at a nearby hospital: 43-year-old Sidney Speaks and 26-year-old Roydrecilious Irby. An autopsy showed Speaks was struck once by a high-caliber bullet; Irby suffered multiple wounds from a smaller-caliber firearm.

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, with help from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, investigated a chaotic scene that produced numerous arrests. Early charges included breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature against Alexius Long and Alexus Coleman for allegedly firing shots into the air, and an assault and battery in the first degree charge against Steven Redd. Authorities later named Johnny Lee Pyles Jr. as a suspect in the murders; deputies found Pyles with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Fountain Inn residence after attempting to serve an arrest warrant, and he died after being taken for medical treatment. Additional arrests included Sterling Orlando Workman on obstructing justice and aggravated breach of peace charges and Michael Dewayne Watts on an assault and battery in the first degree charge.
