Antonio Panuamba was 17 and a senior at Byrnes High School when he was shot and killed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on May 5, 2017. The violence began as a fistfight involving a group of individuals; gunfire broke out during the altercation and Antonio died from his wounds. Another person suffered a minor gunshot wound to the leg and survived.
The investigation led to the arrest of 20-year-old Travis Emil Jones of Greer. In July 2018 Jones pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and battery, and illegally carrying a weapon; he received a 15-year prison sentence followed by five years of probation. Antonio was weeks away from graduating when his life was cut short, leaving family and community mourning the loss of a young person with his future ahead.
