Jackie Purvis was 58 when he was fatally shot at his home on West Main Street in Bennettsville, South Carolina, on December 3, 2016. The shooting occurred about 10:30 in the morning and left neighbors and family grieving a man described as friendly and kind-hearted.
Investigators identified a suspect, Haneef Aquil Childs of Bennettsville. A traffic stop attempt escalated into a high-speed pursuit that crossed into North Carolina, with speeds reported above 100 miles per hour. Law enforcement agencies from both states joined the chase. A spike strip in Laurinburg, North Carolina, disabled Childs’s van; when it stopped he exited armed, reportedly urged officers to shoot him, and was taken into custody after officers used a stun gun.
Childs was held on a $10 million bond in North Carolina on charges including fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and assault by pointing a firearm, and was to be extradited to South Carolina to face a murder charge in Purvis’s death. If anyone knew Jackie Purvis or saw activity around West Main Street on December 3, 2016, please share what can help the investigation.
