Laquan Johnson was 22 when he was shot and killed at a residence in Conway, South Carolina. The shooting occurred on September 27, 2016; authorities quickly determined the death was a homicide. Johnson was Black / African American and a father of two, one child born shortly after his death.

Detectives identified a suspect described as someone intimately known to the victim and his family. Police arrested 22-year-old Javon Dion Gibbs, a close friend of Johnson since middle school and a frequent guest in the family home. Gibbs was charged with murder, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime; he also faced a trafficking cocaine charge after officers reportedly found drugs when he was arrested. A judge denied bond for Gibbs at a December 2016 hearing.
