Franklin Gilmer Parker, 79, was killed on August 25, 2016, in Saint Matthews, South Carolina. A well-known local businessman who owned a bait and tackle shop and an upholstery business, Parker was remembered for his humor and willingness to help others across racial lines. He was also fighting cancer at the time of his death.

Authorities described the killing as a senseless act of violence that appeared to stem from a robbery gone wrong; family members believe Parker was targeted by someone who thought he was carrying a significant amount of money. The investigation led to the arrest of Edward Britt Jr., then 56, who was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Friends and family gathered to remember Parker’s generosity and the mark he left on Saint Matthews.
