A dispute in Sumter, South Carolina on the afternoon of August 19, 2016 ended with the death of 45-year-old Jermaine Williams. According to reports, Williams argued with 74-year-old Nathan Smoot McBride at McBride’s home on Council Street; Williams drove away but was pursued by McBride. The chase ended near the intersection of Council Street and Barlette Street, where Williams stopped, exited his vehicle, and was shot. Officers arrived about 3:00 p.m. and found Williams’ body in the road.

McBride was located at his home soon after the shooting, taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and booked into the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
