Chadwick Garrett, 45, was shot and killed on August 15, 2016, after stopping to help two teenagers whose SUV was stuck near Durant Avenue and North Jimtown Drive in North Charleston, South Carolina. Garrett had agreed to use his truck to pull the teens’ Dodge Durango out of the ditch for a $20 payment. After the vehicle was freed, Garrett asked about payment and was then shot multiple times in the chest by one of the teens, 17-year-old Deon Frasier.
Frasier and a 19-year-old, Michael Dupree-Tyler, fled the scene in the SUV. A witness description and a report that the SUV had been taken without permission led officers to an apartment complex on Dorchester Road, where the pair were arrested after a brief standoff. Both men were charged with murder; Frasier faced an additional count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Both denied bond at a subsequent hearing, where Garrett’s father called them cowards.
