On a summer night in July 2016 outside the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill in Chapin, South Carolina, 29-year-old U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Jonathan Michael Prins and fellow soldier Staff Sgt. Charles Allen Judge Jr. intervened in a violent altercation in a parking lot. Reports say Joseph Elijah Mills was attacking a woman; Prins and Judge approached with their hands up to try to de-escalate the situation.
Mills opened fire, fatally wounding both soldiers. Prins was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds to the upper body. He was a husband and father of three small children. Mills fled but was taken into custody later the same day and charged with murder.
Did anyone in the Chapin area witness the parking lot confrontation or know Prins and Judge’s movements that night?
