In the summer of 2016 a small Darlington, South Carolina, community was devastated when 9-year-old Deziyah Davis and her 52-year-old grandmother, Denise Couplin, were found shot to death in their home on Bobo Newsome Highway on July 17, 2016. The house had been ransacked and the front door forced open, and investigators described the killings as the result of a home invasion and robbery.

Authorities traced the crime to 23-year-old Cephas Cowick and his 25-year-old wife, Katherine Cowick. Investigators reported that Cephas had a prior relationship with the family, having done work for Couplin and lived in the home for a time, and that Couplin had received harassing and threatening phone calls from him before the murders. Law enforcement recovered Couplin’s stolen, burned car on a nearby road; at the Cowicks’ residence they found a .380 handgun, pills taken from Couplin’s home, and Couplin’s debit card in Katherine Cowick’s purse. Both were arrested and charged in connection with the double homicide.

Deziyah’s sister, who was in the house during the attack, later described the lasting trauma of finding her sister and the emotional turmoil that followed. Does anyone have information about the victims, the neighborhood, or contacts who could help fill in details about what happened that day?
