In the early morning hours of July 11, 2016, Carmelo Marmolejo-Calixto, 33, was found dead of gunshot wounds in the passenger seat of a gold Chevrolet Astro van in the Socastee Plaza parking lot near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A second victim, 31-year-old Rafael Aguilar, was discovered nearby and also died of gunshot wounds; the Horry County Deputy Coroner confirmed both died from gunshot wounds to vital organs. First responders were called around 7 a.m.; investigators estimate the double homicide occurred about 4:30 a.m. in front of the El Ya Merito restaurant.
The double killing unnerved the community because it occurred in the same plaza where, a month earlier, a 65-year-old woman had been found stabbed to death, though authorities did not indicate a connection between the cases. The Horry County Police Department later reported that investigators exhausted leads and had no arrests or public suspects. The investigation remains an unsolved double homicide, and the families continue without answers.
Did anyone in the Myrtle Beach area see or hear anything in the Socastee Plaza around 4:30 a.m. on July 11, 2016, that could help investigators?
