Two men were found shot to death in the parking lot of the Socastee Plaza in Myrtle Beach on the morning of July 11, 2016. A passerby with a child discovered a figure on the pavement beside a gold Chevrolet Astro van around 7 a.m. Paramedics pronounced that man dead; officers then located a second deceased man in the van’s passenger seat. The county coroner later confirmed both died of gunshot wounds.
Victims were identified as 31-year-old Rafael Aguilar, a Hispanic male, and 33-year-old Carmelo Marmolejo-Calixto. Investigators estimated the shooting occurred about 4:30 a.m., and noted the van’s windshield wipers were still in motion when the scene was processed. Horry County Police publicly sought tips after exhausting initial leads, but the case later went cold with no announced arrests or suspects.
If anyone was in the Socastee Plaza area that morning or remembers seeing anything unusual, please share what you know.
