Michael Vanwert was 27 when he disappeared after a reported shooting in the Moncks Corner area of South Carolina. Deputies first responded on the evening of March 9, 2016, to a call on Harriet Tubman Lane and found an abandoned Chevrolet SUV in a ditch and blood on the roadway, but no victim at the scene. Witnesses said a local man had shot Vanwert, placed his body into a different vehicle and left.
A missing person alert followed and Michael remained missing for two days. On March 11, 2016, 30-year-old Robert Washington was taken into custody in the Cross area of Berkeley County. Information from Washington led investigators to Vanwert’s remains off Black Tom Road in an unincorporated area of Moncks Corner. Washington was charged with murder and 26-year-old Jessika Key was charged with accessory after the fact; both were denied bond at a hearing at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
If anyone knew Michael’s movements around March 9–11, 2016, or saw a Chevrolet SUV in that area, please share what was seen.
