In the early morning of February 13, 2016, 17-year-old Brandon Scott Spencer was found dead in the road in Camden, South Carolina, about 35 yards from the home of Jimmy Joe Methe. Spencer, a father to a young son, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head after an encounter around 3 a.m. when Methe discovered Spencer and another person allegedly attempting to steal items from his pickup truck.
Methe, then 49 and a Desert Storm veteran, told investigators he confronted the pair, shouted warnings that he would shoot, and fired as they fled. Deputies found a gas can and hose near the truck consistent with siphoning. Spencer’s companion ran from the scene and was not immediately identified. An autopsy confirmed the shot struck Spencer in the back of the head.
Methe was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter and released on $200,000 bond. Kershaw County’s sheriff said Stand Your Ground did not apply because Spencer was fleeing and not posing a lawful deadly-threat. A Kershaw County grand jury later declined to indict, dismissing the criminal charge.
If anyone knew Spencer, his movements that night, or the identity of the person who fled, please share what is known.
