In the early hours of January 9, 2016, a dispute inside a nightclub in Loris, South Carolina, escalated into a deadly shooting that killed 31-year-old Christopher Alexander Sumpter. Sumpter, a Black/African American male, was shot multiple times and taken to Grand Strand Medical Center, where he died during surgery.

Horry County Police say witnesses saw the shooter and three accomplices leave the scene in an SUV. Investigators identified four men believed to be involved. Shortly after the incident, family contact led to the four surrendering to police. Devin Wilson, 23, was charged with murder; Devon Clark, 22, Leveon Edwards, 20, and Timothy Jacobs, 23, were charged with accessory after the fact to murder. The case then moved forward through the courts.
