Alexander Smith, a 40-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on the evening of January 8, 2016, at the Midway Circle Mobile Home Park on S.C. 170 in Ridgeland, South Carolina. He was taken to Coastal Carolina Hospital and was pronounced dead there.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation and, within days, said it had spoken with persons of interest and identified a suspect. The sheriff’s office also reported it was awaiting a decision from the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office about how to proceed. After those initial statements, there have been no further public updates about arrests, charges, trials, or convictions in the case.
