Kristen Jetel Rekeem Williams was 19 when he died in the early morning of September 14, 2015, at University Village at the Coast, an off-campus student housing complex near Myrtle Beach. Police were called around 4 a.m. for a reported assault and found Williams unresponsive and bleeding from his head. Initial accounts were confused: his brother told 911 he’d seen his brother on the ground after an apparent assault, and another caller said Williams had been pushed from a balcony. A small, agitated crowd greeted officers at the scene.

An autopsy later showed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and the inquiry was treated as a homicide. Authorities identified 20-year-old Dequan Rashad Wilson of Myrtle Beach as a suspect; a warrant was issued and Wilson surrendered on September 17, 2015, and was charged with murder.
