On the morning of August 23, 2015, 35-year-old Alvin J. Johnson, a Black/African American man, was shot multiple times near the intersection of Broad and Maple streets in Loris, South Carolina. An autopsy found a fatal gunshot wound to his chest and two other gunshot wounds to his lower body.
Loris and Horry County officers responded that day. The victim’s brother, who was present, identified an alleged shooter to investigators. Police located 36-year-old Garry Kristin Batton at the Tall Pines Apartments, Batton fled on foot briefly and was taken into custody. He was charged with murder and held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
Batton later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter; in December 2016 a judge sentenced him to 22 years in prison with no parole eligibility. What does anyone who knew Alvin or was in Loris that day remember about the neighborhood or that intersection?
