On the evening of July 28, 2015, 24-year-old Roytavus Blanding was sitting on a porch in Anderson, South Carolina, when a bullet fired from a passing vehicle struck him in the head. The Anderson County Coroner confirmed he died at the scene; investigators treated the incident as a drive-by shooting and suspected a gang-related motive.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office arrested seven people and charged them with murder as the investigation progressed. The 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office later dropped the murder charges against all seven defendants, citing insufficient evidence. Prosecutors said surveillance footage existed from before and after the shooting but there was no direct footage of the shooting itself, and the firearm used was never recovered.
Despite arrests, there has been no conviction in Blanding’s death. Anyone who knew Roytavus or has information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
