A dispute at a house party on Howard Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina, turned deadly in the early morning hours of July 25, 2015, when 37-year-old Robert Lee Hull, known as Big Boy, was shot and killed. Two other people were wounded in the same outbreak of gunfire.

Investigators identified Holmes Simpson-Davis as the shooter. A four-day jury trial relied on eyewitness testimony and testimony from law enforcement and medical experts. On September 8, 2017, the jury found 26-year-old Simpson-Davis guilty of Hull’s murder, guilty on two counts of attempted murder for the other victims, and guilty on three counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The judge sentenced Simpson-Davis to life without the possibility of parole for Hull’s murder, plus consecutive 30-year terms for each attempted murder conviction. Simpson-Davis’s prior record included convictions for drug, property, and weapons offenses.
