Keith Graham Jr. was 18 and from Summerville, South Carolina, when he was shot as he tried to leave a late-night gathering at a motel on Holiday Drive. An argument at the party turned into a fight, and in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2015, gunfire erupted inside an elevator as people were scattering. Graham was struck in the chest, taken to a local hospital, and pronounced dead; the Berkeley County coroner placed the shooting at about 1:30 a.m.

Summerville police and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office investigated the incident. Officers took at least one person into custody at the scene; by the next day police identified a suspect and announced charges.
