Candace Leitch Blakley was 24 when she was killed in her North Augusta, South Carolina, home in June 2015. Her husband, 23-year-old Aiken County sheriff’s deputy Matthew Blakley, was at the scene when officers arrived with blood on his hands and said he had accidentally shot his wife. Candace was found in a bathtub with a fatal gunshot wound to the head; a rifle, a spent shell casing, and a broken wedding ring were on the bathroom floor. Another man in the home had attempted CPR but could not save her.

Matthew Blakley was taken into custody, fired from the sheriff’s office after seven months on the job, and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
